Carolyn, First of all what kind of doc are you taking her to? A ob/gyn or an endocrinoligist? The bcp's are good at regulating periods but can also mask symptoms. They can clear up acne and such. I am currently on Metformin for my treatment of PCOS. I have a lack of cycles. I was put on bcp's also and I took myself off of them for "why regulate something that is not present at all?" As for the bcp's you can take Metformin and bcp's at the same time for she is not trying to conceive. Ask the doc to maybe adjust her doseage of the pills, they may be too high for her. He can prescribe even a different brand that may help also. Is she on a low carb diet plan? That has helped me with the headaches. Have her insulin levels tested and see if she is insulin resistant. Has her doc given her any of these tests? I have been on Metformin since January 13th of this year and I am doing very well on it. I have lost 20 pounds and acne is gone and energy levels have went up. I am on low carb also. There are several websites that can answer many questions that you may have. You can go to any search engine and pull up pcos and find many great doctor sites that are very informative for you. Also print everything you read and take it with you to your next appointment. Main thing is education on this syndrom, it is very misunderstood by alot of docs, so you will be armed with information when you go, who knows you may be like me and let them know things that they do not know. I was told by a very good pcos doc that giving birth control pills as a treatment of pcos is like giving aspirin to somebody with a nroken leg, the pain may be less but the leg is still broken.. Silly cliche' but it is the truth. You have to fight the cause of PCOS and not the symptoms. Good luck and I wish you the best... God Bless, TracyP
