My Answer to 'PCOS'

Hi everyone,

I used to post messages here all the time. I explained my situation and tried to wade through symptoms, doctor diagnosis, etc. It has all come full circle and here is my latest update.

For years I had an abnormal/absent menstrual cycle. I have hair growing on my chin (a beard that I must shave daily), side burns and thick hair growth in normal areas. I had been told several times by several doctors that I would not be able to get pregnant without infertility treatment due to hormonal imbalances. Well at the time I could not afford any treatment, and I was fine with the prospect that maybe one day after college I can revisit the treatments available. As of February 2002, I had been with my husband for 3 years, very sexually active throughout, without the use of contraceptives. On February 8th I knew I was pregnant. I could feel my body was different - I didn't get the average symptoms, I just knew there was a baby inside, a baby boy. Three store-bought pregnancy tests and a visit to the doctor confirmed it, and there I was, still having a heavy menstrual cycle and 8 weeks pregnant. This carried on for the first 3 months of my pregnancy. I did not take any drugs to sustain the pregnancy, we rode it out, and I was an active, fit miracle. So, in October my doctor told me I was having a girl, probably 8-8.5 lbs. On November 15, 2002 I gave birth, via cesarean, to an 11.8lb, 23" baby boy! We were both tested for gestational diabetes during pregnancy and after birth, and we were both negative.

I proved each ob/gyn wrong, even the one assisting me with my pregnancy! Now this is the one thing I did differently during that time of year. I went on a low-carb diet for the first time in my life in December 2001. I was on it a very short time (6 weeks?) before I got pregnant. I was very healthy when I got pregnant, and thankfully I was getting a lot of Folic Acid in my diet at the time. I am getting ready to go back on the diet for weight management again (as it was working the first time around, but you cannot continue the diet/lifestyle while pregnant). This time I will use some family planning techniques to control my new found fertility. My son is 10 months old, he wears a 2T and a size 7 shoe!

Ladies, I don't believe drugs are the answer. I believe if you get your sugar intake under control (and there are tons of alternatives to high fructose corn syrup) and your carbs down, you can reprogram your own bodies. Get fit so you can carry your baby and you can have what you least expect. My body kicked in and now my chances of uterine/cervical cancer have dropped dramatically. Just try it. I am not promoting a particular low carb "diet" but there are several good one's out there and try which one is for you. I also have a theory about whether most of us are of the O blood type. I am O+ and I found that a theory behind blood type and diet seemed true for me, as it also advised a low carb diet (where it didn't for AB, A, B). Exercise can not be stressed enough. Your uterus is a muscle, your stomach is a group of muscles, your back is supported by many muscles, all of this is required to be strong for good chances to carry full term. Speed walking is a great form of exercise that gets the blood going. Good luck ladies, and I hope this story spawns similar success stories...
