Hi Liz: First of all, if you are not already doing so, find an Endocrinologist who is familiar with PCOS, there are some OBGYN's that are knowledgable but I have had no luck with any that I have seen. Endocrinologist specialize in endocrine disorders like PCOS. Depending on your insurance you may need a referral from your doctor and depending on where you live it may be difficult to find someone and get an appointment but don't give up!

Treatment depends on your particular situation (which symptoms you have, are you trying to conceive, etc.) You may be prescribed Birth control to regulate periods or Metformin/Glucophage to help your insulin. I,like countless others on this board are currently on Metformin (Generic for Glucophage)-- ( I take 2000 MG per day) and it has done wonders for me.

I am not sure if you are overweight or not, but as far as your diet goes, you do need to watch sugars and bad carbs. (anything with white flour or sugar, pastas, and starchy foods like rice and potatos). Some people follow low carb diets with much sucess. I needed to lose 80 lbs but could not tolerate low carb diets so I have been following a healthy low fat and low calorie diet while avoiding the above mentioned foods. Taking the metformin and following my diet, I have lost 58 lbs and counting in 8 months and my PCOS symptoms are steadily improving. Prior to being diagnosed and starting the meds, I have been able to lose some weight but it was SOOOO hard and it took tremendous will power and it wouldn't be long before the weight returned. The weight was hard to take off and I was constantly craving carbs or sugars. With my meds, I do not have those terrible cravings and it has been easy for me to stick to my diet. And of course you need to exercise.

If you have any questions, come here for advice. This board has a great group of people here who are always happy to offer advice and information about thier experiences.

Best of Luck! Joy
