I was taking a large does of 60mg daily which it probably more than your mother takes, but my overall experience with it was horrible. For the first two weeks or so I felt great, had lots of energy and needed to sleep very little. I felt wonderful. Then I began getting tired and found I couldn't sleep. I ended up having to get a prescription sleep aid which I finally got off recently (2 years later). Around the same time, I began gaining weight. I was hungry all the time. I would wake up at night and feel I had to eat or I wouldn't be able to sleep.I gained a total 60 pounds after a year on the Prednisone, but most of that gain was in the first 5 months or so. My face got really round which they call moon face and I got a bit of a hump. I also have difficulty healing when I get hurt. Bruises last forever and cuts still don't seem to heal properly. I had tried the low fat diet and moderate exercise and had no luck getting any of my weight gain off. I have recently begun a low carb diet and am hopeful that I will finally be able to get to a normal size (or at least to the size I was befor this whole mess). If your mother is not having any problems taking the prednisone, then I guess I wouldn't worry too much, but I commend the doctor for recommending she not be on it for too long. There are many, many medicines out there for arthritis, so I would hope the doctor would try a few more before leaving her on one that has so many potential side effects.
