Re: Birth Control Pills & AntibioticsFrom: Cari (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 30 Aug 2003 10:23:43 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Everyone, I have suffered with the effects of PCOS since I was 17, as far as I can remember. I have 2 children and have had 8 miscarriages. I had to reply to this because there is a special name for people who mix antibiotics and bcp, and don't use a back up method, PARENTS! Now, I know for many of you this may be good news, but it may not be for others. So here is the deal, I got pregnant with both of my children while being on the pill, and with my youngest I took Prometrium (progesterone) so I would not miscarry, and I had NO problems with my pregnancy with him. With my oldest, I was on bcp and antibiotics, did not miss a pill, lo and behold at 20 I was pregnant, and as luck would have it, I did not miscarry then. I am so glad now, she will be starting kindergarden next week. Many sources will tell you that antibiotics will counteract bcp (your local pharmacist, the pill insert read the fine print, check on the internet). If I wasn't ready for another baby and was on bcp and antibiotics I would be VERY carefull. At the very least I don't want another miscarriage. One other interesting factoid that I learned just yesterday...I started on Nuvaring with the hopes that the steady level of hormones would keep me from getting more cysts. On both Micronor and Microgestin I continue to get hemorragic cysts. If you use a vaginal cream for yeast infection it can make MORE hormones be excreted by the Nuvaring, which could mean side effects. Interesting what these things can do... Hope this helps,
-- Cari
