Re: Alcohol and MetforminFrom: Liz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 26 Aug 2003 12:53:32 -0500 (CDT)
I couldn't help but reply to this message. As a college student, I usually went out drinking almost everyweekend. I was diagnosed with PCOS in my very last year of college. I started taking metformin and didn't think twice about it. Suddenly, though, I started having really bad reactions with alcohol. I knew exactly how much alcohol I could handle previous to starting medication, but with the metformin, I really started feeling the effects of alcohol after one or two drinks. My reactions since then with alcohol were bad, my friends told me I was acting really strange and once I blacked out...that particular time, I had 5 drinks in the evening. That really scared me. I also would feel sick very early in the evening and was likely to wind up throwing up. My friends noticed the difference and started calling the metformin my "crazy pills". Now, I do like to drink, so I started experimenting a bit on my own to see if I could get some compromise. I definitely had to really cut down on drinking. But, after some trial and error, I found that my reactions to alcohol were OK if I hadn't taken the metformin for at least 24 hours. It does require prior planning if you are going to drink. If my friends spontaneously go out after work, I volunteer to be DD. I don't like to get into the whole PCOS explanation with them, but it seems that a lot of people are on medicine that you can't mix with alcohol so I just mention that i'm on some medicine and no one bugs me to drink the rest of the evening. Hope that helps! Liz
