Is Fasting Necessary Before A Blood Test?

I did a blood test in April. I was told that I did not have to fast before the test. There was a special screening procedure that would filter the food that I had consumed. The test failed to detect my thalassemia trait. According to the lab, there was no blood film comment in my report. Therefore,my thalassemia was not detected. In fact, I was told that I should be happy with my normal results with all the food in my system prior to the test.
