Hey there first of all, I have no idea about birth defects I have read things about it helping the pregnancy along so the best is to try and educate yourself and to always get a 2nd and 3rd opinions! I do take glucophage myself because, I am not quite insulin resistant but, I take it to try and control other side effects, my doctors sys that not always but often it does help to lose weight control hormones ect..! Good luck, and just always remember to try and self educate yourself!!! Jen
