Taking glucophage if not insulin resistant

I am trying to educate myself. If your blood work does not show insulin resistance do some PCOS patients take glucophage/metformin/etc. anyway in an effort to aid conception? My general practitioner answered my questions about this by telling me, 'It's one thing to help you get pregnant, it's another thing to conceive a child and then have severe birth defects.' Didn't answer my question, but did scare me. Can someone who knows help me to understand this issue. Thanks.
