ACTOS and PCOSFrom: Heather (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 1 Aug 2003 16:01:16 -0700 (PDT)
I was diagnosed last September w/ PCOS and was immediately put on Metformin. I did not have a period on it and the side effects were horrible gastrointestinally. My doctor recently switched me to ACTOS. I am still noticing a relief from PCOS symptoms, and the gastro problems have went away (what a relief, because I was taking up to 8 trips to the bathroom a day!). As far as the weight gain/loss. I had lost weight steadily while on the Met. Now whether that was from watching my diet, the exercise that I started doing or the gastro problems, I am not sure. But I lost around 32 pounds on the met. I have only gained around 5 pounds or so of that back when I switched to ACTOS. Some women told me that this would taper off and it has. I have started losing again, so I would suggest you try it. If you start to notice more than 5 pounds or so of gaining, then I would quit. I definitely understand the emotional aspect of gaining. I have gained around 80 pounds in two years. And definitely get some progesterone from your doctor to induce a period! I would avoid the Provera if possible, because the Bitch side effects for me were horrible! Everyone is different though. You are welcome to email me off list at anonymous@obgyn.net Good Luck with whatever you decide to do! I have been seeing my endocrinologist (Dr. Charles Glueck) off and on and am so discouraged I can hardly see straight. The med he put me on, Glucophage, makes me so ill that I can't function. After several months of it, I finally took myself off and ignored my returning symptoms. Now, he wants to put me on ACTOS. He said I might gain weight, however, and I don't think I can EMOTIONALLY handle that at this moment in time. If anyone is taking ACTOS, could you please tell me if there was weight gain and if so, how much? Is it significant? I know I can't ignore PCOS anymore. It's been 19 months since I've had a period and I'm heading into dangerous territory, I know. Please help! Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free, easy-to-use web site design software
