What should I ask/say at pre-conception appointment?From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 22 Jul 2003 23:53:02 -0500 (CDT)
Hi PCOSers, I was "diagnosed" with PCOS about a year and a half ago. My only treatment was that I was put on birth control pills. I would like begin to try to conceive in October, so I am going to the gyno tomorrow for my pre-conception visit. At my last pap appt. she told me that because of the PCOS they would give me a prescription for Metformin at my pre-conception appointment. She also plans to put me on prenatal vitamins. What should I ask about the Metformin? Is there a particular dose that I should ask for? What is Metformin X? Is there anything else I should advocate for before I begin to attempt to conceive? I am wondering if I should ask for an ultrasound of my ovaries to see exactly what the cyst situation is like? I have asked for an ultrasound before, but she has always avoided giving me one, saying it really wouldn't make much of a difference, as my blood work clearly indicates PCOS (tesosterone level was 133 and I have the 3 to 1 ratio of FSH and LH). I think Kaiser is just extremely cheap. By the way, I am 27 and this will hopefully be my first pregnancy. Any advice what to ask/talk about at this crucial appointment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
-- Amy
