Metformin, acne & depression - probably question for medical expertsFrom: Morag (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 21 Jul 2003 15:59:51 -0500 (CDT)
I've been recently diagnosed as Type II Diabetic (blood glucose levels are borderline high, reasonably well controlled by diet alone), and have suffered from acne since puberty - I have also suffered from clinical depression in the past. My GP suggested that i may have PCOS and blood tests have suggested that this is probably true (but the results are borderline). He has suggested trying Metformin - not for my diabetes, but as a treatment for acne. I have taken dianette in the past which (mostly!) worked but he suggested i stop taking that due to long-term use being linked with increased risk of strokes(?). Can Metformin really help acne?...I've never heard of this before as an acne treatment! Could it also reduce my risk of depression in the future? or is that just too good to be true. Thanks for your help!
