metformin for life?

Two months ago I was diagnosed with PCOS and just two days ago was prescribed Metformin, which I am very excited about, but I am concerned about what will happen to my options as time goes on. Does anyone know if the benefits of taking Metformin/Glucophage decline over time? I read somewhere that the body may not respond as readily to it after 2 or 3 years, which is worrying. If that's true, then what?
