I took my first pill (500mg) at 11 last night (with a late dinner).
Today at about 2pm I started with the nausea and diarrhea. I'm afraid
to leave the house! I am supposed to move up to 1000mg daily after one
week. Are the side effects supposed to taper off by then? Will I likely
have side effects at the same time every day, or is it directly related
to what I eat? I just want to know how long I must suffer through this.
TIA!

Hi Michelle,
What you should have first an endocrine and metabolic check-up, b/c your
symptoms may also stem from adrenal overproduction of androgens (the
hormones responsible for acne, hairgrowth, moodiness etc).
For your info

Hi Ann,
Well I can only speak for myself but my side effects lasted about 3
weeks. I started off on 500 mg and steadily increased to 2500, which I
have currently been on for about 4 months. It can be frustrating, but
it is normal to have these side effects for the first few weeks. You
are not alone! Some say it is related to what you eat although I never
really noticed that myself. I have heard that if you take the pills
with a high carb meal, the side effects are a lot worse. Hopefully,
some other people will answer you with better advice! Hang in there!

I, too, am on Metformin/Glucophage. My OB/GYN put me on 500mg for 2-3
weeks, then 1000mg for 2-3 weeks, and now I am on 1500mg. Stepping it
up slowly is the key. Wait until your body stabilizes before stepping
it up for your symptoms will get increasingly worse. After about a week
with 500mg and 1000mg my symptoms subsided. Although 1500mg by body
still is reacting and I have been on it for 4 months! In my opinion each
of us has a threshold.
The peak time of the effects of Metformin is 2-4 hours after taking the
pill. I can almost set my clock that 3 hours after taking the pill I
need to be near a bathroom. I have noticed though that the greasier the
food the worse the symptoms (although that may be just in my head!).

Subject: Orthocept - non-existant monthly period
Message-ID: <200304051816.h35IGSw08827@mail.medispecialty.com>
Dr.,
I have been on Orthocept 28 day for 8.5 years. I have never had
problems with it in the past. The last 3-4 months my period has been
only a couple days and extremely light. I have taken a pregnancy test
each month for the past few months suspecting possible pregnancy, all
tests were negative. My last visit to my doctor was about 5 months ago
and everything was fine.
My husband and I are not planning on trying to have children for another
couple years, my fear is that my period will be gone completely by that
time. Is this a sign of becoming infertile??
