Hi Ree,

PCOS is beleived to be caused by a problem with how our bodies process sugars and carbohydrates. This results in higher than normal insulin levels (insulin resistance), which in turn gives you symptoms like weight gain, excess hair, polycystic ovaries, etc.

Glucophage is a drug that treats the insulin resistance. For some women it is enough to get everything back to normal and they also lose weight. For others (and recommneded anyway) lifestyle measures are really important.

Lifestyle measures include plenty of aerobic (and resistance) exercise, weight management (though it is very difficult) and following a diet that is low in refined carbohydrates and sugars.

Welcome - the good thing is that you have discovered this early and perhaps can minimise the effects. There is plenty of info on this site (you can do a search), and please ask whatever questions you have.

Best wishes
