Hi, thanks for responding. By four weeks pregnant I mean four weeks since conception, six weeks since my last period. My doctor said she spoke with a diabetes specialist from Duke University and this specialist said I could still get gestational diabetes even while on met. She also said no one in the US is recommending met while pregnant and that it crosses the placenta and the long term effects are unknown. I've spoken to some endocrinologists myself and they all lean toward my staying on it. It's just a little scary when you are actually pregnant and need to pick just the right moment to go off of it. Just to be clear, are you saying I'm less likely to get gestational diabetes if I'm on metformin?

The complications from metformin are due in the first trimeter (neural tube defects), so if she afraid of the complications, she should be afraid during that period, not later. She is right that you are "vulnerable" to gestational diabetes (I would say prone to), so why does she want to leave it untreated and expose you and your fetus to the consequences?
