Alcohol and Glucophage

My husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes and was prescribed Metoformin (glucophage) to control his diabetes. He enjoys drinking at football games and on weekends if we go out (usually 5 or more beers). The doctor told him to limit his drinking to a couple beers because of the effects it has on Metoformin. My husband thinks that if he skips his doses of medicine on the days he watches football or goes out, then he won't have any problems. Is this a type of medicine that you can skip doses like that? I agree with the doctor that he needs to cut back his drinking, but my husband won't listen and I am worried about his health.
