Metformin to kick-start ovulation?

I am seeing a reproductive specialist in regards to my PCOS. I had three cycles of clomid, with no success. My doctor then did a HSG test and the results showed there to be no blockages. Instead of putting me back on clomid, she prescribed Metformin for me. She said that she is prescribing Metformin because in some women it helps them to ovulate on their own. Is this true? Is it ok to take this medication when my blood sugar levels are normal?

My doctor said that I should try to be on Metformin for a few months to see if I start to ovulate again. If not, then she'll put me back on Clomid. So for now I am taking Metformin and am putting up with the side effects. But it's not fun.

Can anyone answer my questions? Thanks!
