Understanding MetforminFrom: Elaine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 18 Mar 2003 18:25:41 -0600 (CST)
Can the Dr. or someone help answer my questions? My daughter has been diagnosed with PCOS - 21 years old, diagnosis made by RE on symptoms of no periods without being on bcp's and reversal of FSH and LH levels. Blood tests reveled these hormones were at normal range, but ratio reversed. Always been healthy eater, works out 1 hr. 6 days a week at gym, 5ft.2in., was 105 lbs. In last 8 mos. weight became an issue(15 lb. gain). She began putting on weight, even though decreasing calories at times to 700-800 a day. With workout, she should be in deficit and anorexic looking from a mom's point of view. RE would not put on Metformin because she wasn't heavy enough, however our Internist did. Three weeks ago, she started on 500mg. and 5 days ago began taking 1500mg(3 pills a day). She has also been to a dietician and is elimating carbs., - yogurt for breakfast, lean Chicken slices for lunch with fruit or salad, supper is lean chicken and lots of veggies. RE did run a glucose tolerance test on her and it came back a 4 and said my daughter should have high metobolism. Why the impossibility with the weight then? Doesn't just the fact that she can't drop weight mean she is insulin resistant or is something else wrong? Could there be other reasons? Ultrasound showed no poly-cystic ovaries. Does the metformin only help with weight loss in women that have blood tests that show insulin resistant? Because she has normally been a thin person does Metformin not work in this manner? Are we suppose to sit back and watch the weight increase, which will cause more medical problems? Do we look to prescription diet pills that block fat that I have read other PCOS suffers trying? Did these deliver results? Do we need to let the Metformin have more time or when do we know it is not working and we try something else? My daughter is starving herself and miserable. Sorry this is long, but would love some answers. Drs. we've seen seem to know little and not that interested in finding out. Thanks abundantly, Elaine
