Re: Any other UK sufferers???From: Lara (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 18 Mar 2003 15:02:48 -0600 (CST)
Hi Petra I have had pcos diagnosed for the past 10 years and am also in London. You are absolutely right and I have said before on this forum that the uk is far behind treatment compared to usa I have been on Dianette for 8 years - tried metformin alone 1000mg daily for a whole year and had NO periods plus excessive weight gain and hirsutism. So went back on dianette - with dianette the body hair does not disappear but becomes softer and I lose weight on dianette and feel much better. Also my acne clears up and is much better - of course u also get a monthly 'bleed' The only down side is terrible migraines esp around the time of bleeding - they are totally disabling - I have to hide under the duvet in a dark room for 2-3 days and am constantly taking Migramax for this. You cannot work / study / do anything during this time - it is severe migraine. There are so many drugs like spironolactone and actos and others mentioned on this forum that are NOT given for pcos in the uk All they do is put u on the pill until u want a baby. Many people here on the forum say that glucophage is much more effective than metformin even though the ingredient is exactly the same in both - metformin. I am still on dianette but am considering giving glucophage a try in a higher dose but am a bit reluctant to come off dianette as it CONTROLS (not cures) most of the pcos symtoms at least 50% hope this helps your question we are far behind in treatment here in the uk!!
