Re: PCOS - questions on med optionsFrom: Christina (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 6 Mar 2003 19:23:00 -0600 (CST)
Jessica I just wanted to let you know you're not alone. While I have no gained quite as much weight, I weigh 201, I still suffer from the same reactions by doctors. A couple of years back I wanted to go and see if I could take metformin for my problem, but was essentially rebuffed by the dr. Recently, I've been doing a lot of reading on the web and have discovered dr's everywhere are starting to prescribe metformin as a therapy for PCOS regardless of insulin resistance being clinically present or not. (Results from the test coming up positive). I am on my way to the Dr. again tomorrow to see if now someone might listen to me, since there is now much more evidence that metformin and other drugs like it could be beneficial. I really hope you find the answers you're looking for and a dr. that will listen. If you don't, move on the the next dr. until someone finally takes you seriously. As for your hair problem, you can take Aldactone which will really start working 4-6 months after you begin taking it, but it doesn't get rid of everything, and it causes birth defects in male children (feminization of genitalia)...Find a dr. that will listen is my advice...good luck. :)
