Alternative to metformin?

I was prescribed metformin a couple of years back. It made me very ill - sickness etc - and I was taken off it straight away. I was recently discharged from hospital care as it was decided Dianette was doing enough and no further treatment was needed. I am overweight (obviously not helped by the contraceptive pill), but am finding it virtually impossible to lose it. Is Dianette really the only option?

Also have just been diagnosed with a cyst in one of my breasts - could it be linked to PCOS?

I come from the UK and it would seem that we know a lot less about PCOS.

Would appreciate any advice you can give me!!!! Thank you.
