Metformin and PCOSFrom: Jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 19 Feb 2003 18:23:15 -0600 (CST)
Hi! I am new to this site. I am 27 and have been diagnosed with PCOS for 10 years. I have never had regular periods(without the pill) and for the past 10 years have taken the pill to regulate my periods. About 5 months ago I stopped taking the pill and was put on metformin. I started by taking 1000 mg a day. AFter 2 months, nothing happened and my doctor upped the dose to 2000 mg a day. I have been on this dosage for 3 months and still have not had a period on my own. I had one period due to provera. Much of what I have read suggests that the standard dose is 1500 mg. Yet, I am not ovulating on 2000 mg. I desperately try to lose weight and I have a healthy diet. My endocrinologist said the key to this is weight loss. I'm frustrated because I do exercise 5 times a week and I am very conscientious of what I eat. My husband and I are interested in starting a family, but I'm really nervous about what the process will be like, if we can afford the treatments, etc. I have an appt with my RE next week. I'd appreciate any advice or comments. Thanks! Jodi
