Re: hypothyroidismFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 4 Feb 2003 00:27:04 -0600 (CST)
Hi, treatment of thyroid conditions should be carefully monitored. Would very strongly not recommend going it alone. Testing for thyroid conditions is relatively simple - all it takes is a blood test. They should test for TSH, T3 and T4. The doctor should also palpate your thyroid to see whether it is enlarged or not, and should take account of your symptoms. TSH levels should be somewhere between 1 and 2. A slightly higher value could be ok, if you have no symptoms. The lab range for normal would be between 0.5 and 4.5 (approximately - depending on lab). T3 and T4 should probably ideally be in the middle of the reference range. When you take thyroid meds, it is important to avoid becoming hyperthryoid - because the long terms risks of that are also severe. If I were you, I would persist in trying to find a good and sympathetic doctor. You could visit the Mary Shomon web site for information and there are also forums and board on her site that will allow you to ask other people their experience and recommendations in finding a good doctor. Best wishes
-- Sally
