Re: Metformin QuestionsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 3 Feb 2003 13:54:18 -0600 (CST)
I've been on Met for about 2 years now. I started out with 1500mg/day (500 3x day) which I worked up to by taking 500/day for the 1st week, 1000/day 2nd week, 1500/day 3rd week to help minimize the side effects while my body adjusted. Now I'm taking 850mg/2x day because I kept forgetting to take my lunch dose! I don't recall "flu" symptoms, but stomach cramps, nausea, gas, and diarrhea are common side effects. My suggestion is: Try to avoid high carbohydrate meals when taking Met. A lot of carbohydrates can make the stomach symptoms worse. If you do eat a lot of carbs, try to balance it with more protein. I still occasionally have stools that aren't as "solid" as they were before the Met, but I don't get "diarrhea" anymore and I don't have to run to the bathroom. It will take a few weeks for your body to adjust.
