Re: Finding a sympathetic doctorFrom: Annie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 29 Jan 2003 17:12:32 -0600 (CST)
You are so right. When I first started getting symptoms of PCOS when I was about 18, I went right away to a GP (not know any better) and thoguht I might be pregnant b/c I have previously had very regular AF. They (of course) put me on the pill and I stayed on that for years. When I got married a few years ago I went off the pill only to find that my symptoms came back. Anyway, long story short: I find out that my sister and my two aunts have been diagnosed with PCOS. I start researching it like crazy and realize that the symptoms match! I have all the major ones! So I take the info to my current doctor (who also put me on the pill after our first check-up as I just moved here last July, and I didn't know what PCOS was back then) and she discredited the syndrome as a "hoax". I haven't seen any magazine articles but I took with me a ton of info from the net and a bookabout PCOS I had read to learn more. I am convinced but what good does that do when I can't get treatment without a diagnosis and can't get a diagnosis from my doc...very frustrating. She DID however put me on Provera to start my AF and I just started clomid to try to get pregnant this month. That is certainly a positive sign on her behalf but I am more concerned about long term care- who is going to help me if an when I have a family and am looking at the rest of my life with PCOS! Thanks for the support. Again, if anyone has knowledge of a PCOS-friendly GYN anywhere in the Hudson Valley of NY please please let me know... Annie
