I just wanted to say that for myself, I like the fact that met (glucophage) has been around a long time. It is a widely used drug among diabetics, some for long periods of time. I feel much more secure taking it rather than Actos or Avandia, which according to my understanding, are much newer drugs. After having taken FenPhen, and all the scary press that came out, and having the combination of drugs pulled off the market, I for one am extremely leery about trying a relatively new drug. That said, I have also been fortunate (so far) to have very few side effects from the met over the month I've been taking it. I am sure I would be more open to trying the other drugs if I were having a more difficult time with the met. I must say that the idea of taking the drug once a day as with Actos and Avandia sounds great. Taking met three times a day is kind of a pain!!!

The problem with Metformin is that it always fails over time
because it only addresses symptoms. It does not address the core
defects of type 2 diabetes which are Insulin resistance and Beta Cell
Impairment. If you stay on Metformin alone, you can be sure that your
glycemic control will fail eventually.
