Re: ovarian drillingFrom: anonymous@obgyn.net ("anonymous@obgyn.net")Thu, 9 Jan 2003 16:17:01 -0500
Ok.....so, then you HAVE tried other options. This may be why your RE recommended the OD. Keep in mind, MEDICINE DOESN'T KNOW EVERYTHING!!! I was on injectibles 5 or 6 cycles. (Thankfully, back then my insurance covered it!) I would never produce more than TWO follicles at a time! The cycle I eventually conceived on was the one we tried after having taken nearly a year off from trying to conceive. Nothing seemed to go right on this cycle. I took a combination of Pergonal and Metrodin. The previous cycles had taken about 12 days of injections to get the follicles to "mature egg" stage. We assumed this one would be no different, and I ended up finding I was short in the supply of meds. I called around to the local drugstores and happened to find one that stocked Pergonal only. We decided to go ahead with a few more days of that. The only follicle developing STILL had not reached optimum size. I was cramping from the medications and we decided to go ahead with the shot of Profasi to force ovulation. (This was where my doctor admitted MEDICINE DOESN'T KNOW EVERYTHING.) Well, this cycle I also had a different tech doing the vaginal ultrasounds. She had done some reading on her own and found that sometimes the gel lubricants they use for the probe can act as a sort of spermicide. We decided to skip the lubricant and she just dipped the probe in a glass of warm water before exams. A few weeks after the Profasi shot, I was having such bad abdominal cramping, I was sure I had some kind of dreaded stomach cancer or something. I kissed my 8 year old daughter goodnight, leaving her home with my husband, and drove myself to the hospital. At first, they weren't sure what was wrong. This hospital wasn't one where it fertility patients were common. It was eventually discovered I had several huge fluid filled cysts on both ovaries. This is a sign of hyperstimulation. The same hormone that goes up with pregnancy can show up with hyperstimulation....so, I was in the hospital nearly a week before they knew for certain I was pregnant! My stay lasted another 2 1/2 weeks, but nine months later I gave birth to a wonderful little boy. Keep in mind too, that MY battle was still in the "dark ages" of infertility treatment. My son is now 9 1/2 years old! These were the days before much was known about PCOS or how it messes up the hormonal system and insulin link. I guess what I'm saying is DON'T GIVE UP HOPE! *HUG* You might want to see if there are any RESOLVE chapters nearby if you feel you could benefit from talking one on one to other couples facing infertility. You're in my prayers! Hugs Shelley (mother to Clomid baby, Brienna, age 18 years and Pergonal/Metrodin baby, Tristan, age 9 years) Thanks for your prompt replies to my earlier post. I hated to hear some of your advice though because I've actually already HAD the OD. (Dec. 2, 02) I've been on metformin for about 9 months, tried clomid for 3 (totally resistant), 4 cycles with injectables (first gave no mature follicles, 2nd and 4th gave too many and 3rd gave 2, followed with IUI, no pregnancy. My RE is well respected by patients and OB/GYNs. I trusted him when he said OD was the right thing now I have 2nd thoughts! I just couldn't keep spending $1200 on injectables every month to have too many follicles to do nothing! By the way, the difference between my 1st cycle with 0 follies and my 2nd with 8 was only 1/2 vial every other day. During all cycles I was monitored by U/S atleast every 3 days, sometimes more. REs thoughts are that after OD I'll be able to ovulate just using clomid. I'm on that cycle right now, will find out if I have any mature follicles a week from tomorrow.
