Re: Help! PCOS is confusing and frustrating!!!!!!!!!From: Anon. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 3 Jan 2003 09:14:56 -0600 (CST)
Hi Lisa: I know where you're coming from! I started Metformin in August of 2000, and it's been a good experience for me. That said, it's been a year and a half since my diagnosis, and I'm still coming to terms with PCOS! I'm losing my hair, but since starting the Glucophage (Metformin), I seem to no longer be growing excess hair. I did lose half of the 100 pounds I'd gained (in 18 months!), but I have 50 to go. You know how it goes :-) I also have endometriosis, which is acting up again :-( I keep reminding myself what my doctor said -- it's actually a _good_ thing, 'cause it means that my hormone levels are getting back to normal! My doctor said that physicians weren't even prescribing a really low-carb diet for diabetics anymore and hesitated to put me on one. HOWEVER, I have "experimented" over the past year and am learning which foods in particular affect me badly (ice cream [wah!], sugary drinks, etc.) and which seem to help, rather than hurt (potatoes, bread, etc.) -- it doesn't seem to run along a strictly carb-based line, but the more sugary items really affect me in a negative way (I get shaky, my moods go CRAZY, and I wake up depressed the next morning). Hope this helps -- you're not alone! :-)
