I'll be adding this to my http://nichollsvi.tripod.com/p_cream.html webpage.

http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/compounding.html

The Misuse of Compounding By Pharmacists Bruce A. Bouts, RPh, MD, FACP

Among the issues noted were:

1) Lack of quality controls for content, quality, purity, stability, potency of drugs. 2) Questions on whether or not sustained release products can be reliably made when non manufactured. 3) That the organizations promoting compounding (Professional Compounding Centers of America and the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists) are linked to the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), who promotes a number of questionable treatments. 4) Story Marketing, (Meadville, Pennsylvania), offered a November 1999 newsletter encouraging pharmacists to compound a thyroid preparation for treating "Wilson's Syndrome". They didn't mention that E. Denis Wilson, MD who 'created' the diagnosis, was severely disciplined by the Florida Board of Medicine in 1992 and no longer practices medicine. 5) Pharmacies compounding products that already exist in commercially available forms are likely to be harming consumers and violating the law. State boards of pharmacy are who you can complain to about this. Even more scary, major manufacturers haven't done anything about compounding due to how they feel they will be viewed. This means they lose profits, although proponents of progesterone creams claim that's all the pharmaceutical companies are about! 6) A major point of advice is to avoid a compounded product when a generic or brand-name agent is available (Provera or Prometrium in progesterone creams case).
