I've taken several cycles of Clomid and I always started Clomid on cycle day 3. This was prior to the birth of my first son. When we began to try for #2, the RE told me to start Clomid on cycle day 1. I asked him why since I'd always started it on cycle day 3 previously. He told me that they were finding that the earlier Clomid was taken in your cycle, the better your response would be. I never did get to start that Clomid cycle because I later found out I was already pregnant so I can't tell you from first hand experience if it works better.
