Re: ProgesteroneFrom: Victoria (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 29 Dec 2002 08:07:52 -0500
Jalan, I created a web page from the material I picked up on the progesterone creams. From what I picked up off of different doctors, FDA reports (its against the law technically), and the science that we know, its questionable. See http://nichollsvi.tripod.com/p_cream.html. Does it work for some women? Yes. Do placebos work for some people? Yes. There isn't any RCT or double blind, placebo controls behind a consistently produced product (the way prescription drugs have done) to prove that it works, who and how many it works for, what conditions it works for, and what side effects it has. As for the science behind it, among the links I have is an RE in training who reviewed Dr. Lee's information, and there were errors in the basic science from what she said. Dr. Lee wrote about progesterone helping osteoporosis, but every other bit of evidence published elsewhere has shown no correlation. Its always been estrogen being a key factor. As another doctor said, his work is popular in the lay press. When it comes to women's health, what sounds good a lot of times is more important and gives us 'warm fuzzies' rather than the facts.
