Re: saw palmetto and nursingFrom: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 22 Dec 2002 12:26:14 -0600 (CST)
>Can I take Saw Palmetto while nursing? Please answer, my receding hairline is makine me very depressed.< I understand the hairloss that comes after pgy--it seems like I lost everything I *didn't normally* lose while I was pg, if that makes sense. The heartening thing is that it WILL taper off. The bad news is that saw palmetto won't make a difference in post-partum hair loss. It's just gonna happen. Not even the OTC Rogaine for Women makes a difference in p-p hair loss. B/c saw palmetto is an anti-androgen, I *wouldn't* take it during nursing. It has the same effects as spironolactone (anti-androgen), and that is contraindicated for nursing. It is depressing, but do take heart--your hair will stop falling out soon enough, and believe it or not, mine hasn't started to fall out from regular PCO since having our baby (and he's now nearly 11 mos. old). Many women have respite from some symptoms of PCO after pgy, and I guess I just responded to the hormone surges, etc., this way. Hope it gets better for you!
