The same thing happened to me when I changed to generic, and my doctor assured me that the medications were vertually the same. After taking the generic for a few weeks I started to get very sick. I could not hold anything down without vomiting because it upset my stomach so badly. It also caused my cycyles to be way off after I had finally gotten them regulated. My pharmacist was very nice and exchanged the remaining pills I had for Metformin and made sure that my account said no generics accepted. It makes my copay for the insurance be higher but it's worth it not to have the side effects.
