Re: Dr. Sam...2 daughters with pcosFrom: sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 8 Dec 2002 05:30:22 -0600 (CST)
Hi, I am not dr. sam, but here is my 2 cents. I would not start the 15 yo on BCP, but focus on lower carb diet and exercise. Then when you see then endocrinologist in person (rather than just talk to his office), explain the situation - maybe he will also see the 15 yo as an exception. Else you would have to find a paediatric endocrinologist or a gynecologist who is experienced in dealing with PCOS and would be prepared to treat your daughter. In any case, she should not use bcp until all diagnostics have been completed - as bcp masks symptoms and also makes hormone testing invalid. Dare I say that an insulin sensitiser may be much better than bcp. Use of bcp is controversial and while it can make life more pleasant by masking symptoms, it doesn't treat anything........ hence the recommendation for an insulin sensitiser. Metformin (or alternative) can be effective even in women with apparently normal GTT. And GTT should be blood glucose and blood insulin, not blood glucose and urine glucose. Unless diabetes is suspected. Best wishes
