Dr. Sam: special diet before GTT?

My daughter's new doctor has agreed to give her a three hour glucose tolerance factor test. I suspect she is insulin resistant and want to have confirmation. He has also prescribed metformin for her to try and see if she feels better on it(not until after the GTT). He said she has to follow a special high card diet for three days before having the test--200g/day!!!! If you are insulin resistant wouldn't it make more sense to just take the test without high carbing first? She is away at college so we'll have to wait till she comes home for Xmas break to do the test if she has to follow the special diet. Meanwhile, she keeps gaining weight while eating a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Does it make sense to try metformin to "see if she feels better" on it? Is it the type of drug you can start and stop without any repercussions(other than the initial gastrointestinal adjustments)?

Even though her blood work all came back normal, her gynecologist diagnosed her with PCO because of her symptoms--no period for six months, rapid weight gain, excess body hair, scalp hair loss, fatigue. She put her on ortho tri cyclen to create a monthly period and said she'd feel better and be able to take some weight off. The only benefit so far has been the monthly period, I am concerned that it is adding to her depression/mood swings. I am afraid to take her off since we did that last year and that is when all these PCO symptoms came on. Thank you for your advice, Dr. Sam
