Special diet before having Glucose Tolerance Test?From: anonymous@obgyn.netSat, 23 Nov 2002 09:22:29 -0600 (CST)
My daughter's new doctor has agreed to give her a glucose tolerance factor test. I suspect she is insulin resistant and want to have confirmation. He has also prescribed metformin for her to try and see if she feels better on it(not until after the GTT). He said she has to follow a special diet for three days before having the test and it is extremely high in carbs--like 200g/day! Has anyone else had to do this? If you are insulin resistant wouldn't it make more sense to just take the test without high carbing first? She is in college out of state and don't think she'll be able to have the test till Xmas break because its too hard to follow the diet and then fast 12 hours, have the three hour test, miss classes, etc. Also she feels drugged when eating carbs, so I can imagine how she'll feel with 200g/day!!! Also has anyone taken metformin to "see if she feels better" with it? She is constantly fatigued and hopes it will help with giving her more energy and also be able to take off some weight. I welcome your input, thanks much for your help. Elaine
