Dr Sam - 2 questionsFrom: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 20 Nov 2002 14:14:01 -0600 (CST)
1. I was taking generic metformin and had a relapse of PCOS symptoms. All the progress I made on the Glucophage went away. My periods stopped, my hair started falling out, my body hair was coming back AND getting worse. I have had my doctor (a new doctor becuase we moved) prescribe the name brand glucophage again, because I have heard from other women the switching to generic didn't work as well for them. My doctor thinks this could be the reason, however she warns me that sometimes the glucophage just does stop working. Have you ever heard of this happening? I was on name-brand glucophage for a little over a year, then was on generic for about 6 months. I have been taking 2000mg, 1000mg with breakfast and 1000mg with dinner. (Sub question - I have lost a LOT of hair. Can hair lost from PCOS grow back when the problem is corrected, or is it gone for good?) 2. My new doctor has told me that from a PCOS standpoint, there is no good reason to be on birth control pills. She said that the ovarian cysts they help to suppress are not the same as the cysts we have with PCOS. Since the BCPs don't do anything about our insulin problems, the insulin is still acting on the ovary, regardless of what the BCPs are doing to shut off the pituitary gland's single to ovulate. Have you ever heard this before? Every doctor I have ever seen has said BCPs are good for PCOS because they make our cysts go away and our ovaries settle down. But if my new doctor's belief is true, it would explain why BCPs never seemed to provide me with any symptom relief whatsoever, aside from regular induced bleeds. I never had any relief from PCOS until I went on Glucophage. Just wondering what your opinions on these things are. - jodi
