It seems that it would be more healthy than feeding a child formula from a bottle.<

While you are technically correct, that is a landmine issue. Watch where you step with this one! Formula is nutritionally complete for infants and children under 1 year. Breastmilk is the IDEAL, but not always possible, for a myriad of reasons. Breastmilk is the "model" for formula--they have made formula as complete nutritionally as breastmilk. But for mothers whose HEALTH is compromised or for other reasons they might CHOOSE, formula is perfectly fine. If a mother's health is compromised, then the breastmilk she makes may not any better for the child than formula, and if the formula allows the woman to treat her health more vigorously/completely, then by all means, formula feed!

There is A TON of guilt and pressure on women to breastfeed, and ultimately, whatever you decide IS UP TO YOU AND WILL BE THE BEST THING FOR YOU AND YOUR BABY. Guilt should not go hand in hand with feeding your baby--as long as you are giving your child what s/he needs (FOOD), then you are doing the best thing for that child, no matter how/where the food/nutrition comes from. If you stopped giving the child what s/he needed (FOOD), THEN you'd qualify for the 'bad mother awards.' You don't qualify for them if you CHOOSE to use formula over breastmilk.

Sorry to be so adamant over this one (okay, I'm not *eally* sorry), but I'm tired of having my friends (and me) beat up b/c we've chosen formula for a portion of our children's feeding schedule.
