Re: Medications/Treatments + BreastfeedingFrom: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 15 Nov 2002 08:26:06 -0600 (CST)
Sue-- I guess there are a few things to be addressed--first, your health. Your health is tantamount, b/c if you're sick, you're no good to your kids. If your health isn't good, then your abilities as a mom are compromised. Secondly, talk to a RE about an insulin sensitizer and nursing. I took one (Actos), and took it all the way through my pgy. My son got more Actos during the pgy than he did during nursing. Our pede will tell you that the only drugs strictly contraindicated for nursing are chemotherapy drugs. Third, please don't low-carb and nurse! Even an old copy of What to Expect in the First Year indicates that breastmilk is affected by ketosis and can hurt a child. Check a copy of the book and see what you find. I don't think any of the low-carb gurus recommend nursing and following their plans. Finally, is it possible that it might be healthier for you to wean your kids? You can focus more on your health this way if you feel the need to low-carb, and if they're getting sufficient nutrition (the oldest one has to be) through other means, maybe it's something to consider. The AAP recommends nursing through the first year, but after that, it's not considered nutritionally necessary. And I will tell you that no matter what any group with an agenda says, formula isn't the worst thing that's ever happened to a child. Some of the smartest people I know were formula-fed only, and the pedes will tell you that after 6 mos. of nursing, the immunologic benefits are pretty much over. Just something to consider, if you're worried about the effects of an insulin sensitizer or low-carbing and the nursing factor. HTH
