Re: Pergonal

Hi Again, Lori!

Just so you know....when I was on Pergonal, there was only one cycle that I had more than one follicle develop. That cycle it was two. I thought "Wow! Twins!" My mother is a twin and they've run in both sides of the family, but that cycle wasn't one that was sucessful.

On the other hand....about our fifth round....I DID become pregnant. My son is 9 now. That cycle seemed to have just about everything going not quite right. I was on a combination of Pergonal and Metrodin (a purified form of pergonal where only the one hormone is present....it's the one most PCOSers are lowest on). We ran out of meds before the cycle was completed and I had to call around until I (Praise God!) found a pharmacy that stocked it! They only carried Pergonal, but the doctor said that at that point, he thought it was the only med I'd need. The follicle didn't reach ideal size but I was cramping so painfully we decided to go ahead with the Profasi to make me ovulate. About 3 weeks later, I was in the hospital with hyperstimulated ovaries. My stay there lasted 3 1/2 weeks. But.....my son is just fine!

Another thing that was different on this cycle was that the technician had been doing some research on her own. I was going to a local hospital for the ultrasounds and they weren't in the "fertility" business....so I was a unique case. The tech had read that sometimes, the gels they use to lubricate the probe can act as a type of spermicide, so toward the end of the cycle when ovulation would be happening any day, she used plain water to lubricate the probe. Maybe that had something to do with our success! (We had found out after several cycles the previous year that my husband's testosterone and sperm counts were extremely low. We believe this was due to him playing power volleyball 3 nights or more a week. The successful cycle was after taking a break of about 9 months....and just before his busy volleyball season started!)

If you were developing at least 1 follicle when you were on the other meds, perhaps your chances will be better with Pergonal! I remember too well the pain of being disappointed time and again. Although I've overcome infertility twice (my 17 year old is a clomid baby), I still have days when I see mommies with their little babies and feel that familiar tug at my heart and soul....the one that asks "why not me?"

You're in my prayers. You're welcome to lean on me anytime! Lord knows I had plenty of support during my long years of infertility!

Hugs

Shelley

Hello, they told us that we can have a Dr come and give us the shots but it will cost us because she doesn't do it for free. I am allowed to give myself the shot in my butt or my thigh. If I do them instead of my husband, I will do it in my thigh where I can see what is going on. I have had many vaginal ultrasound because i was on Clomid and Metaforim first. So I use to go to see what was going on and there was always just 1 follicle when I went. Now from what I understand, I will be developing more folicles with these meds. I guess now the wait is on... GRRRRRRRRRRR
