Re: Gastric Bypass and PCOSFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Oct 2002 19:44:34 -0600 (CST)
While I agree that gastric bypass will probably not 'cure' PCOS, as it is a complex health condition, Research has shown that very soon after the surgery, Type II diabetes is 'cured' or at least non-existant. I believe this is due to the fact that certain parts of the gut are removed, or by passed, and there seems to be a link between that and the hormones secreted with diabetes. This is from a reference to a long term study post gastric bypass surgery: "Bypassing the forgut produces profound alterations in glucose metabolism, indpendant of weight. It is believe the gastrointestinal tract, on contact mainly with carbohydrates, released insulin-stimulating intestinal hormones known incretins. The hypothesis is that in the morbidily obese, high incretin levels may overstimulate and eventually exhaust the pancreatic islet cells, but these incretins levels fall after bariatric surgery." This was from an article in Nutrition Today (Vol 36:5: September/October). There is also a source for the article. So, this changed my thinking about this surgery, and for some folks might be the best solution.
