Re: Gastric Bypass and PCOSFrom: sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 29 Oct 2002 20:20:38 -0600 (CST)
Hi, gastric bypass will not reverse the PCOS, but it will help you lose weight and this may reduce your symptoms. There are some women around who have had it, but it is not a surgery to be taken lightly. There are risks at the time of the surgery and also long-term complications (osteoporosis / malnutrition syndromes) - not to mention that you will never be able to eat 'normally' again. So please do your research very carefully before going ahead with so drastic a surgery. I am not a great fan of the Atkins, but would recommend that you give low carb dieting a very very serious and concentrated effort before going ahead with surgery. Also, will your Dr. let you try a higher dose of glucophage. We have one lady here - Sonnet - who is taking a very high dose of glucophage and is now after a few years seeing benefit. ANother approach may be combining glucophage and another insulin sensitiser that has a different mode of action such as Avandia. Hope this helps
