Re: Has anyone had really good results on Metformin?

Hi there Elaine

I started on 850mg twice daily although the doctor now wants me to take another 850mg on top of that. When I started the medication you could say I spent quite a lot of time in the bathroom but the side-effects subside over a couple of weeks and it does get better. My energy levels are so much better than what they used to be in the bad old days and as I can do more I don't feel so frustrated and down about the whole situation. I have to say the results took time and I got a bit fed up to start with as I had gastric upset and had to cut down alcohol with no immediate results. I would say it took about 3 months to work for me but then I have a very high level of insulin resistance so I imagine it takes time to work. As soon as I got a period (about 4 months after starting the tablets) I started to lose weight and it has been really dramatic for me. I have to say I cut down alcohol and cut down of refined carbs. I realise some people are Atkins diet fans but I don't think the odd potatoe is going to kill you, it is just moderation. My exercise routine is appauling so I cannot attribute the weight loss to anything other than the Metformin.

I refused to take BCP as I get hypertension on and off and had a bit of an intellectual battle with the gynaecologist over this one as I am a medical researcher by profession and gave him a good argument as to why I didnt want to take it. Having spoken to a UK expert on PCOS she agrees with me that BCP isnt the answer in every case and isnt essential as long as you are prepared to take progesterone tablets now and again to induce a period in case you dont get one naturally. I have lost just over 14 lbs in the last 2 months and I was overweight so I needed to lose it although I didnt find it too distressing. I feel a lot better for it and have faith in the Metformin tablets. I know it doesnt work for everyone but it has improved my quality of life no end.
