Re: Need information about MetforminFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 29 Oct 2002 02:22:09 -0600 (CST)
Dear Mel, I don't think it is so common to gain weight on Met. In many cases women lose weight or at least are pretty stable. Is your daughter taking any other drugs? Metformin does not mean you can stop watching her diet. Met should be combined with a lower carb diet (cut out all/most refined and proceessed carbohydrates - including soft drink, fruit juice, etc.) and as much exercise as possible and as frequently as she can manage. Unfortunately women with PCOS can often gain weight very easily and lose it only with great difficulty (even with meds) and diet. Someone else might lose weight on 1500 calories per day easily, but your daughter only slowly on 1200 calories a day. So your daughter may have to try extra hard to keep her weight under control, including watching how much and what she eats. I would suggest basing her diet on veges, lean proteins and some high fibre, minimally processed cereal/grain products. Be sure to eat healthy fats in moderation. Hope this helps.
