metformin vs. BCP

It seems that some affected by PCO use the BCP in order to have a monthly period; others use metformin; some use both. Other than for birth control purposes, why would one use the BCP? does it help get hormones back in balance? Does metformin create a period and help with insulin resistance? What about mood swings and fatigue, I've heard metformin helps with that as well as with the ability to lose some weight. Is one better than the other or is it better to use both? I welcome all input. Thanks much.
