I would love to see the references for these articles. It probably would be hard to determine what came first...the PCOS pre-disposition, or the Depo causing the PCOS. It makes sense to me that depo can make PCOS worse, as it is suppression of hormones, just like the birth control pill...only amounts for a longer time. The same analogy could be a teen who was started on the pill early in her teen years, when her cycles might have been regular. When she goes off the pill, her cycles are irregular and she develops symptoms of PCOS. The same might be true of Depo...so, my question would be...Were the roots for PCOS there, just waiting to show themselves, or did the depo cause the PCOS. I personally am beginning to feel that we should not be using the BCP as the first line of treatment, but rather use diet and exercise and then metformin for management...to preserve future fertility. But, whatever the case, folks need a good, informed consent about what they do. I think as we learn more and more about this condition, we will see management change also. At least I hope so.
