Another note about PCOS...several others have asked if having a hysterectomy will make PCOS go away. Even if the ovaries are removed, oophorectomy, the woman still will have PCOS, as it is an endocrine system disorder. In fact, there is a push for it to be renamed as "Metabolic Disorder" and there are theories that there is also a male equivalent that manifests itself in some similar ways. Since PCOS does not have the same set of symptoms for every woman, perhaps the name should be changed...as the implication is that PCOS is entirely a FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE disorder, rather than something that affects a woman's entire body function.

This kind of attitude is very disturbing. How insensitive of this physician, and such confusion. A pre-disposition for Insulin resistance and PCOS makes gaining weight so much easier, and losing weight so much harder. PCOS is a very complicated condition, with a lots of theories........ I wish doctors would quit treating women with insults and start working with them to improve thier health. The research is supporting this, so we just need to wait for the physicians to catch up. PCOA will never 'go away' it will just improve itself. Medications can improve the effects, in different degrees. Weight loss will help, yes. Just not in the way he suggests it might......

Well said, Pat! AMEN!!! I think the fact that women can share information thru the internet (in particular) and the fact that a combined voice makes it hard for the medical community to NOT hear us and take action, is one of the greatest things we have going for us! After decades of (usually male) doctors treating us like it's "all in our heads", studies are proving what we've known all along.

And, as someone previously so firmly pointed out, Yes, these studies take time and money....but isn't it ironic that there always seems to be more funding for MALE problems....hence we have heavily marketed Viagra while PCOS is only just coming out of the dark ages? Also, until fairly recently, most studies have been done on males only...perhaps to avoid possible problems should a woman become pregnant. It is only in recent years that they are realizing that women's systems often metabolize medications in a much different way than men's systems and that some treatments need specialized equipment for women...such as certain heart or circulatory system surgeries where women are more likely to die if the traditional "male" sized surgical tools are used.
