I would agree with Victoria that it takes a lot of funding to run proper clinical trials (or any kind of research project for that matter) and it can take a year just to get a trial approved by an ethics committee, recruit staff and volunteers. As a University researcher in the UK I know it is difficult to obtain research funding as demand always outweighs available resources. I just hope one of the leading research councils ring-fences some funding for PCOS research soon (given that it can affect up to 10% of the female population). I am not sure it is a question of persuading doctors about patients views on treatment etc but the funding bodies who are often populated by academic and expert panels who are not at the front-line (i.e. not actively treating patients).
