Re: Articles: Metformin, Preconception and PregnancyFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 10 Sep 2002 19:33:44 -0500 (CDT)
If you have PCOS or severe Insulin Resistance, the trend seems to be towards continuing with Metformin into the pregnancy, and sometimes through the pregnancy. Women that are diabetic might also take Metformin throughout the pregnancy. There has not been enough good research to clarify the total safety long term, but nothing serious has shown up. But, the effect of the drug is to improve your cells sensitivity to insulin, so that glucose is used more efficiently by your cells. Women who are already Insulin Resistant, whether with PCOS, or just pregnant, they are at more risk for gestational diabetes, another condition that also has Insulin Resistance as its cause. So, one needs to weigh the risk and benefits of starting, stopping, and continuing Metformin. On the positive site, you get used to it, and it makes things better all around. The purpose in the improvement of health. Preconceptionally, and as pregnancy progresses, helping keep your blood sugars in a normal range, witch is obviously the point. If you are really dedicated to a low to moderate carb diet (around 100 G/day), and daily exercise, you can help keep your blood sugar in a normal range. If it means a succesful pregnancy, some women and providers might choose to take the risk and continue the medication throughout the pregnancy. And other providers and women might choose to not take the risk, and some women and providers are not even current about these options. Hope this helps.
